Gymnastics ACT State Team excel at Australian Gymnastics Championships

The Gymnastics ACT Representative Gymnastics team has completed another highly successful Australian Gymnastics Championships highlighted by athletes from the ACT winning nine Gold Medals and in the process were crowned the Australian Champion of those disciplines. The nine Gold were amongst 27 total medals (9 Gold, 13 Silver and 5 Bronze).

ACT had 70 athletes competing for medals across the two weeks at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, across the Gymsports of Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG), Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG), Trampoline Gymnastics (TRP) and Rhythmic Gymnastics (RG).

A standout performance for the Australian Gymnastics Championships was Michaela Smith who was crowned the Australian Champion for All Around, in WAG Level 9 Open 15 & Under. Smith of Canberra City Gymnastics Club took out the title with a total score of 100.900 ahead of Marina Yamazaki from Victoria with a score of 100.025. She also went on to win the Gold Medal on Beam and Floor as well as the Silver Medal on Vault. Zoe Evans of Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club had an outstanding Level 10 competition finishing in the Bronze Medal position in All Around winning Silver in Floor and Beam along the way.

Not to be outdone, the Men’s Artistic team had a successful Gymnastics Championships. The Senior International division saw Adam Falzarano of Canberra City Gymnastics won the Gold Medal on Rings and James Bacueti of Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club take out the Silver Medal on Vault against the top ranked Australian International athletes. Simon Bewick of Canberra City Gymnastics Club was another of the male athletes to excel at the Championships placing 3rd in Level 9 Open winning Bronze in the All Around as well as winning Gold on Floor and Silver on Pommel and Parallel Bars.The other Gold Medal Winners in MAG were Alex MacDonald in Level 10 Open on Vault, Reilly Flanagan Level 8 Under on Pommel, Isaac Baldwin on Parallel Bars in Level 8 Under and David Kidd on Vault in Level 9 under 17.

Congratulations also to Valeriy Shuster of Southern Canberra Gymnastics who was awarded WAG National Levels Coach or Coaching Team of the Year by Gymnastics Australia.
