To all our great Canberra sporting clubs

You might have seen that I recently launched a campaign called Let Kids Be Kids. It’s a simple message for us parents and spectators – that our behaviour at sport affects our kids. So it’s up to us to keep it positive, create good culture around our clubs and call each other out if it ever gets abusive or unfair on the kids.

The campaign sends messages direct from children to their parents – reminding us that kids want to play sport because they love playing with friends, trying their hardest and being active. The last thing we want is for poor sideline behaviour to make kids embarrassed, lose confidence and motivation, to feel threatened or even to drop out of playing sport all together.

As leaders of your sport and recreation organisations/clubs, I ask you to support this initiative and I want to thank the many clubs that already are. To assist, I encourage you to access the Let Kids Be Kids campaign videos, toolkit and case studies via www.playbytherules.net.au/let-kids-be-kids and see how they can benefit your club. In particular, I encourage you to share the videos with your members and participants. I’d also welcome your views about how this goes down at your clubs and if there are particular areas we need to work on.

By taking postive steps together we can make sure that all athletes, regardless of age, ability, gender, culture or class feel supported and welcomed in our sporting community.

Thanks again, see you on the sidelines!

Yvette
