Statement from Gymnastics ACT President and Chief Executive Officer  (17 March 2020)

We are living in unprecedented times.  COVID-19 is having an enormous impact on our way of life, including our sport. Gymnastics ACT (GACT) have been working closely with Gymnastics Australia to monitor the situation as it changes hourly.  The health and wellbeing of the gymnastics community including athletes, coaches, team personnel, officials, volunteers and staff, is our top priority.  We want to ensure that you remain safe and healthy.

The ACT Government have declared a Public Health Emergency for the ACT, which will have implications for all sporting events, including Gymnastics. Additionally, Gymnastics Australia have announced this morning that the Australian Championships, scheduled to be held in Melbourne in May has been cancelled, a decision fully supported by GACT.

As a result, GACT have made the difficult decision to suspend all competitions for the next three (3) months, effective immediately.

We understand the significant impact this has on athletes and in fact the entire Gymnastics Community.  Sport is part of our social fabric, however the health and safety of our athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers must be our priority.

We urge clubs to take a common-sense approach to training and club activities and we strongly encourage clubs to implement additional hygiene practices to keep all clubs members healthy and reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19.  This includes promoting hygiene practices and social distancing measures.

Over the coming months GACT will continue to adhere to the advice provided by state and federal Government organisations and the World Health Organisation who are providing accurate, timely and credible updates relevant to the sporting and wider community.

Now, more than ever, we need to support each other and be kind to each other.  Our athletes in particular will need additional support during this challenging time, and we will work hard to keep providing opportunities for our athletes.

We will continue to provide you with updates as they come to hand.
